Whatever you want to call it, within the last year the exchange via videotelephony has become part of the everyday life of many meeting participants for obvious pandemic reasons.\n\nAlthough Skype and Co. are now more widespread than ever. But in the technical development of the audio, quite little has happened it seems. Of course, there are already some efforts to further develop the major services auditorily. One could already suspect it: The most effective step to improve a video call (auditory) is probably the introduction of spatial audio.\n\nThe following article will explain the advantages of immersive audio compared to the current mono standard in video conferencing.\n\n[image id=\"16429\"]\n\n## Zoom, Skype, Teams, and Co. visual communication\n\nProbably every user has not only one of the video telephony services in use. So most will already have an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of each provider: Some can show more people, some are clearer, others have that background feature, etc.\n\nIn any case, the fact is that the differences are almost exclusively on the visual level. Auditorily, you usually have to make do with sparse audio settings and mono format.\n\n### Does Zoom have spatial audio?\n\nNo. Zoom offers a stereo and hi-fi mode, which improves speech intelligibility and lets music be streamed in two channels, but it does not place voices in space. That stereo path is still useful for streaming binaural material into a call.\n\nIn practice I use Zoom regularly to demonstrate spatial audio examples, for a reason hardly anyone knows: you can transmit in stereo twice over. Once through the microphone, and additionally through screen sharing. I know of no other conferencing software that manages this, neither Teams nor Discord nor FaceTime.\n\nZoom has already taken a step and offers a stereo or hi-fi function. This facilitates speech intelligibility due to the higher audio quality and brings the possibility to stream music in stereo. The two audio channel function is also very handy for streaming binaural audio samples, for example, at corresponding events like [link id=\"4426\" text=\"this\"] here.\n\nSo we already see Zoom taking a step in the right direction. But what the added value of spatial audio is to video calls will be clarified in the following.\n\n***Update immersive experience***\n\nZoom Apps now offers exciting new possibilities for immersive meeting and webinar experiences. Through the use of Virtual Backgrounds and Virtual Foregrounds, participants can now customize their video feeds in dynamic and personalized ways. With an ability to blend video and graphical elements together, Zoom Apps is taking meetings to a whole new level of engagement and individualisation.\n\nWhether and how immersive the whole thing is then \u2013 just try it out. But as you can guess, there is more potential in the sound.\n\n***Update Zoom Spatial Audio confirmed***\n\nZoom has introduced spatial audio for meetings and webinars to provide a more immersive experience by positioning participants\u2019 voices in the stereo field based on their location in Gallery or Immersive View while utilizing noise reduction. Available in the Zoom desktop app from version 6.0.10 onwards, it supports only microphone audio and requires wired stereo output\u2014Bluetooth devices and shared screen audio are not compatible.\n\nZoom Rooms also support spatial audio when equipped with stereo speakers and the appropriate software version. The feature can be enabled and tested both in the app settings and via the Zoom web portal. It aims to improve clarity and presence in multi-person or hybrid meetings.\n\n[image id=\"16425\"]\n\n### Update Apple FaceTime\n\nOnly one month after this article was published, Apple is already presenting an update at WWDC. With iOS 15, calls via Facetime can now use 3D spatial audio. The voice is heard from the direction where the screen of the device is located. In addition, noise is filtered out even better. This is particularly important for spatial sound, as this should be as isolated as possible.\n\n### Update Clubhouse: Drop-in audio cha\u202at\u202c\n\nI\u2019m happy to read that spatial audio will be rolling out to iOS devices. Since there are usually quite a lot of people in a room (or let\u2019s say: more than two), it will be easier to distinguish between the people talking. All wired and wireless headphones will support the 3d audio feature. Bluetooth has a technical limitation, but the effect will still be applied.\n\nUpdate 2022\/04: In their [blog post](https:\/\/blog.clubhouse.com\/enhancing-conversations-with-spatial-audio\/amp\/) they also state that people are using stereo input for live music. They are aware of stereo not being as easy to implement into spatial audio as a mono-source is. Their workaround is to mono sources out of the two channels from left and right. This preserves the richness from the stereo width while gaining spatial depth.\n\n### Update Dolby.io Communications API now called OptiView\n\n[link url=\"https:\/\/optiview.dolby.com\/\" text=\"Dolby OptiView\"] have targeted conferencing experience by introducing their spatial sudio capability in their communications APIs. This technology enables users from around the world to place themselves in a 3D audio space, letting them hear other participants from their respective positions.\n\nDevelopers are now able to access this audio feature by creating a new application and turning on the Open Beta flag through [Dolby.io](http:\/\/Dolby.io)\u2019s dashboard. What\u2019s more, the audio experience is enhanced even further with the application\u2019s state-of-the-art audio system, which places users around a given participant upon joining a conference. When someone speaks, their circle illuminates while sound emerges from that specific area on the web page. [Dolby.io](http:\/\/Dolby.io)\u2019s Spatial Audio capability is a game-changer in the conferencing industry and sets the standard for future audio experiences.\n\n### What is spatial audio in Teams?\n\nTeams spatial audio places each participant's voice at their position in the gallery, which makes conversations easier to follow. It needs wired stereo headphones or built-in stereo speakers, Bluetooth is not supported, and it only engages in meetings with more than two participants.\n\nMicrosoft is introducing a brand new audio feature to the Teams desktop clients this month that promises to revolutionize online meetings. The new feature, called spatial audio, creates a natural and inclusive atmosphere for all participants, allowing them to focus better on conversations. This powerful new functionality has been assigned the feature ID 107783 and is expected to roll out across MS Teams in May.\n\n***Update: Microsoft Spatial Audio now available for everyone***.\n\nTo hear it all, you\u2019ll need USB-wired stereo headphones or speakers, or your device\u2019s built-in stereo speakers. Please note that Bluetooth audio devices are not currently supported. These usually go into a phone mode and only allow data reduced mono playback.\n\nIn order to enable spatial audio, team meetings should have more than two participants in the catalog view. It is important to note that spatial audio is disabled when network bandwidth or computer memory is limited to maintain audio quality. Please also note that one-on-one calls and large meetings with more than 100 participants are not currently supported.\n\nStep by step instructions: Select \u201cSettings and more\u201d and then \u201cDevices\u201d. Under \u201cSpeakers\u201d you should select your compatible device and activate the toggle button for spatial audio playback. These settings are automatically saved and will apply to all future team meetings.\n\nDuring a meeting, you can go to your Teams calendar, select the meeting you want to attend, and select \u201cDevice Settings\u201d before joining. Select your compatible device under \u201cSpeakers\u201d and activate the toggle button for spatial audio playback.\n\n[Official Guide from Microsoft](https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/de-de\/office\/r%C3%A4umliche-audiowiedergabe-in-microsoft-teams-besprechungen-547b5f81-1825-4ee1-a1cf-f02e12db4fdb)\n\n[image id=\"16436\"]\n\n[newsletteroptin text=\"Spatial audio for future video calls \u2013 subscribe now!\"]\n\n## Benefit 1 \u2013 Differentiability of voices\n\nAudio quality aside, what differentiates a direct conversation from a video call? On an auditory level, mainly the directional impression! In a video conference with multiple people, it quickly becomes chaotic with the current mono. As soon as more than one person is speaking, it quickly becomes confusing without auto framing. Our brain has a hard time distinguishing the voices because they all come from the same direction.\n\nFrom an audio engineer\u2019s point of view, mono is also referred to as in-the-head localization. If you wear headphones, you hear loud external voices in your head. Sounds almost like a case for a psychiatrist. The solution here is not a visit to the doctor but can be solved technically via the so-called externalization. More about this later.\n\nIf you distribute the voice of each person in the 3D audio space, as we are used to in reality, this suddenly makes it easier to differentiate \u2013 spatial sound makes it possible. In this way, a conversation situation can be spatially recreated. Just as we know it from meetings, discussions, or sitting together in a cozy atmosphere. Strictly speaking, stereo is even sufficient for this, as this video shows:\n\nThe example of Highfidelity founder Philip Rosedale makes it audible in which direction it could go. However, the reverberation is missing here, as we have it in reality. This is crucial for externalization. Here we have just a left-right localization. Also, the sounds appear very close to the ear of the listener. Too close to be natural.\n\nBut there are more things that would elicit the potential of the technology. So let\u2019s take a deeper dive!\n\n## Benefit 2 \u2013 Head-Tracking\n\nFor accurate sound localization, small head movements help. When we want to locate something more precisely with our ears in everyday life, we usually move our heads unconsciously. By changing the angle to the sound source and the associated change in the runtime. Also, the level differences between the ears, we can locate sound sources even more precisely.\n\nStay on top of the latest 3D audio developments!\n\n[image id=\"16427\"]\n\n### Head tracking via headphones\n\nHead tracking is needed to incorporate these movements into the video call. Sounds like a technical effort. But this technology is also on the rise and is now already available. There are even several ways to measure head movements:\n\nApple already has head-tracking-capable headphones on the market with the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max, as well as Samsung with the Galaxy Buds Pro \u2013 to name two well-known representatives. Furthermore, there is the possibility to use [link id=\"4216\" text=\"external head trackers\"] that are attached to the headphones. At this point, I would like to refer to this [link id=\"3045\" text=\"article\"] for more information.\n\n### Capture head rotation via the video image of the webcam\n\nNow, not everyone owns such audio devices. The third option is head tracking via webcam, which is especially exciting for desktop applications. This is roughly how the face recognition looks, which is necessary to adapt the 3D audio sound field to our head movement in real time. \n\nThe ability to detect head movements via webcam is a clear win-win situation for spatialized video calls. Because the communication requires a camera, no additional hardware purchases are necessary. And the necessary technology for audio spatialization can even be integrated into the browser. In this respect, the colleagues from [atmoky](https:\/\/atmoky.com\/) are at the forefront and the right contact persons.\n\n### Video Call without Video?\n\nThinking a bit further, the video aspect could even be neglected by spatializing the voices \u2013 at least when it comes to differentiating the persons. Also, a spatialized telephone conversation would convey a completely different sense of presence of the other person, i.e. it would also affect on a psychological level, especially with a plug and play system.\n\nThere are now several providers of such Bird View Meeting Places. e.g. gather town, spatial chat, or the already mentioned High Fidelity. How this sounds can be heard here:\n\n## Benefit 3 \u2013 Zoom Fatigue, Video Conference Exhaustion\n\nPeople who attend several video conferences per day probably know the feeling. You feel drained after the video call, even though you may not have been that active. This phenomenon is called Zoom Fatigue, which is a certain tiredness after web meetings. This doesn\u2019t necessarily have anything to do with the content of the meeting, but with the audio not being thought through!\n\nAs mentioned before, mono is the default in video calling and this demands more processing power from our brain. Why? Because all voices reach our ears without directional impressions, i.e. via mono, the brain is busy differentiating and assigning them. This process happens in real conversation without this additional effort for the brain \u2013 because we can localize sound sources in the environment.\n\nThis is confirmed for example by this [scientific paper](https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6185866\/). Spatial audio can simulate realistic directional scenery. Integrating this technology into video calls would therefore save our brains unnecessary thinking. Accordingly, meetings would be more pleasant and ultimately more efficient by increasing productivity.\n\nThis approach to true-to-life communication in virtual meetings is also being pursued by the atmoky team. Their demo shows how spatial audio can be used in web meetings. This creates a natural acoustic scene and increases speech intelligibility. The potential of the cocktail party effect and the so-called Spatial Unmasking should be fully exploited.\n\n[image id=\"16434\"]\n\n## Challenges\n\nWhat you *don\u2019t* need is an expensive, fancy 3D microphone \u2013 although there\u2019s a nice [link id=\"888\" text=\"overview\"] here \ud83d\ude09 . A normal mono microphone on the headset or the one built into the laptop anyway is enough. The virtualization of spatiality is done by software. Metadata is added to the audio stream and the program calculates in real time how the virtual audio should sound.\n\nA problem can then be audible artifacts that can arise during the data reduction as mono during transmission. But in the long run, this can also be solved: NVIDIA, for example, has found a way to display the video \u2013 without transmitting it at all (see video below)! Artificial intelligence makes it possible.\n\nLikewise, NVIDIA has developed an outrageously good [software](https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/geforce\/guides\/nvidia-rtx-voice-setup-guide\/) for noise cancellation with the RTX Voice application. This allows voices to be transmitted much more clearly without noise. Of course, this is also advantageous when using immersive audio. Then you don\u2019t hear a virtual sound source with noise from the laptop fan and keyboard tinkling. Instead, you hear beautifully polished speech, as we know it from reality.\n\n## Conclusion and solutions\n\nActually, it is surprising that so little attention has been paid to audio in video calls. Even independently of Corona, it would have been time to take the next step here. But because of the inflationary increasing hours spent with video telephony \u201cthanks\u201d to the pandemic, an auditory further development is probably long overdue.\n\nSo you can see that action is needed here. Time to integrate three-dimensional sound into our everyday web, video, and audio-only meetings, conferences and whatnot. This would have a positive impact on productivity. And at the end of the day, we\u2019d probably have more energy and motivation left over.
