Most of them are vibration vests. A few add force or electrical stimulation. This article explains how they work, what they can and cannot do, and what I have learned building the sound that drives them.\n\n*Disclaimer: the first draft of this article came out of an AI and read like a shopping list with invented specifications. I rewrote it around what I have actually used.*\n\n## What is a haptic suit?\n\nA haptic suit is a garment with actuators distributed across the torso, and sometimes the arms and legs, that produce tactile feedback in sync with a virtual environment. The common construction is an array of vibration motors in a vest. The premium constructions add force feedback, electro muscle stimulation or air pressure.\n\n[image id=\"10975\"]\n\n### How does a haptic suit work?\n\nThree parts. A driver signal says what should be felt and where, an actuator converts that signal into movement, and your skin's mechanoreceptors read the movement as touch. The driver signal is usually one of two things: a discrete event fired by the game engine, or an audio channel routed straight to the actuator.\n\nThe second method is the one I work with. The low frequencies of the mix drive the vest directly, so the haptic layer is a mixing decision rather than a separate authoring job.\n\n## What I have built with vibration wearables\n\nFor DKMS I produced [link id=\"8065\" text=\"Destiny's Ride\"], a 3D audio experience in a shipping container that toured festivals. The brief was blood cancer, which is a difficult subject to make people stop for at a festival. We built an emotional arc in sound and gave every visitor a vibration vest, which I describe as a strap-on subwoofer. It converted the audio into haptics in real time and stayed synchronised with the 3D audio content, so the piece was felt as well as heard.\n\nAt the premiere at the surf festival on Fehmarn, close to 500 people registered as bone marrow donors. That number is the reason I keep arguing for haptics. It is the cheapest large increase in presence available today, because sight and hearing are already handled well by current hardware and touch is not.\n\n[image id=\"10977\"]\n\n## Types of haptic feedback\n\n| Type | What it does | Where you meet it |\n|---|---|---|\n| Vibrotactile | Motors buzz the skin at varying intensity and rhythm | Vests, controllers, phones |\n| Force feedback | Physically resists your movement | Gloves, steering wheels |\n| Electrotactile | Stimulates nerves directly with small currents | Research suits, some full-body suits |\n| Thermal | Changes local temperature | Rare, mostly prototypes |\n\nVibrotactile is the only one in wide use, because it is cheap, safe and light enough to wear for an hour. Everything else is still expensive, heavy or both.\n\n[newsletteroptin text=\"visit my newsletter\"]\n\n## The suits and gloves you will actually encounter\n\n**bHaptics TactSuit** is the model most studios own. It is a vibration vest with a large motor array, wireless, with an SDK for Unity and Unreal. This is the practical default for location-based entertainment.\n\n**Teslasuit** is the full-body option with electro muscle stimulation and motion capture built in. It targets training and research budgets rather than entertainment.\n\n**HaptX gloves** deliver genuine force feedback through pneumatics, which is a different class of sensation from vibration. They are also tethered and priced for industrial simulation.\n\n**SenseGlove** sits between the two, using brakes to resist finger movement so a virtual object feels solid when you grip it.\n\nI am deliberately not quoting motor counts and battery figures here. Those change with every revision and the older articles on this topic are full of numbers that were never right. Check the manufacturer page for the current model before you specify anything.\n\n[image id=\"10979\"]\n\n## What haptics can and cannot do\n\nIt can tell you an event happened, and roughly where on your body. It can make a low end you would otherwise only hear into something you feel in your chest, which is what a subwoofer does for a room and a vest does for a person wearing headphones. It can carry an emotional arc, because a slow pulse and a sharp hit read completely differently even at the same level.\n\nIt cannot render texture. Current actuators have far too narrow a bandwidth to reproduce what your fingertips resolve when you run them across fabric. It cannot render weight either, unless there is force feedback, which vests do not have.\n\n### Can you feel pain in a haptic suit?\n\nNot properly, and not by design. Consumer suits produce vibration, which reads as impact or pressure rather than pain. Suits with electrical stimulation can produce an unpleasant sensation, and they are limited in software precisely so that they do not injure anyone. Anything marketed as letting you feel being shot is describing an intensity, not a new category of sensation.\n\n[image id=\"10981\"]\n\n## Designing sound and haptics together\n\nThe mistake I see most often is treating haptics as post-production. Someone finishes the mix, hands it over, and a developer maps a few events to the vest afterwards. The result is always slightly late and slightly wrong.\n\nThree rules I work by. Decide early which layer of the mix drives the body, usually everything below roughly 100 Hz. Keep audio and vibration inside a few milliseconds of each other, because drift reads as a broken effect rather than a late one. And leave silence in it, since a vest that runs continuously stops being information and becomes noise you tune out.\n\nThere is one adjacent application worth mentioning: [link id=\"10893\" text=\"immersive meditation and relaxation\"], where a slow haptic pulse can carry a breathing rhythm without a voice having to instruct anyone.\n\n[image id=\"10983\"]\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\n### What is haptic feedback in VR?\n\nTactile sensation generated in response to events in the virtual scene, so that the user feels something in addition to seeing and hearing it.\n\n### Do VR haptic suits exist?\n\nYes, and they have been commercially available for years. Vibration vests from bHaptics and full-body suits from Teslasuit are the two you will meet most often.\n\n### How does a full-body haptic suit work?\n\nAn array of actuators across the torso and limbs is addressed individually by the software, so feedback can be localised. Full-body suits may combine vibration with electro muscle stimulation to simulate resistance as well as contact.\n\n### Do I need a haptic suit to feel spatial audio?\n\nNo. A well-produced spatial mix on headphones already puts sound around you. A vest adds a second sense, which strengthens the effect, but it does not create it.\n\n### Is haptics worth it for a production?\n\nIf the piece has an emotional arc or a physical event, yes, and it is usually cheaper than another visual upgrade. If it is a talking-head scene, no.\n\n[button id=\"44\" text=\"Back to the Blog\"]\n\n### Let's talk about your project\n\nBuilding an experience where sound and touch have to work together?\n\n[link id=\"155\" text=\"Get in touch \u2192\"]\n","related_articles":[10893,10949,9905,9349,879]},"yoast_head":"\n
How VR Haptic Suits Work: Sound You Can Feel<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"VR haptics is used in tracking suits, gloves, and real-life applications, giving you a full-body immersive experience.
